Back with the Grizzly's

100915 – Back with the Grizzly's

Woke early, didn’t get a great sleep, kept waking up looking for Northern Lights as we slept with the windows open, out on the isthmus at Chilkat Reserve.

Porpoises around again this morning and some otters.

We had a slow start to the day. Met three folk from New York, who camped nearby.

At the top of the road down into our camp area is an artist, John Svensen of Extreme Dreams http://www.extremedreams.com/. He is a lovely gentleman, he is seriously into rock and mountain climbing. He has a Climbing wall on the outside of his Art Gallery, and he has a ‘slack line’, both for the local kids and visitors to play on. The kids and I had a go on the slack line, very interesting. The pressure is now on for me to build one at home. We were enticed by a few pieces of his art. He spent a lot of time with Tayla as one of his styles is ‘stamping’ and Tayla did this style recently at school. He was very inspiring.

A shower, that was the next order of the day. We ran into the New York Campers and they gave us a tip of good showers at the local pool, so, we hit the pool for a shower. While the RV has a shower, long hot showers in a large shower recess with strong water pressure is appreciated, and for $3, that’s what we got at the pool.

The Hungry Moose had become a daily ritual while in Haines, it was one of those road side booths that sell ‘drive-thru’ coffee but they also did great ice-cream. The perfect place to be on another hot 70 degree day.

Being all refreshed, we picked he Chilkoot Reserve again (the Grizzly area) for our last night as it was fairly close the Ferry terminal for a 6am start tomorrow. Enroute we saw some Grizzly’s, parked the RV and walked back. Josh had the fortune of stepping in some Grizzly Crap, and did it stick to his shoe, the scat just wouldn’t come off, it stuck with him for the rest of the afternoon. So the question was answered about Bears and yes they do in the Woods.

The fish trap was pulled down today so the bears had moved further down stream. We came upon the sow with two cubs and they entertained us for the late afternoon. Then things got a little ‘hairy’ as they moved up from the creek where they were eating salmon, to eat the berries right in front of us. Because of the thick berry patch and other trees, we lost sight of them. A German couple were in their 4x4RV and were tracking them too. All of a sudden the cubs ended up right in front of Linda again. Luckily they then went back to mum, but she was only a few meters away. I tried getting a photo to give some perspective, with Tayla at the edge of the scrub and mum and cubs a few meter in. If you look in the photo below of Tayla, and look past her, you should see mum.

Weather: Wonderfully clear blue sky and very warm

Low: Low 40’s High: 70.
