Seward - Tourist Mecca

Monday  6th - Labor Day Holiday.

Seward – Tourist Mecca

Scooted out of Skilak Lake nice and early (10mph huge potholes) (see photos of lake below), though the fishermen were up and out way before us.

Looked for a nice place near Cooper Landing for a breakfast stop, enjoyed the fast flowing river with drifting row boats chartering fly fishermen, lovely area.

Made it into Seward, a little tired from the night before. This is a Cruise Ship Port, and Tourist Mecca, and don’t the tour prices state this. $160 to do a 6 hour tour out to the Kenai Fiord Glacier area, or, to helicopter up to Bear Glacier and dog sled ride for 90 min in total, $439. The last Cruise Ship was in, Royal Princess.  We ate Halibut (fish) and chips on the wharf at a nice restaurant and overlooked the trawlers and surrounding glaciers and walked the shops in a beautifully warm and sunny day.

We were told that a black bear had walked down the boardwalk there the day before, and was being a bit of a nuisance, so they shot it this morning. We're OK, we have our BB Gun!

We then headed out to Exit Glacier. Linda took this time to have a rest, while the kids and I hiked up and out to the Glacier. It’s an awesome feeling standing before the bottom of a huge glacier, great views. I took a drink from the ancient water supply. I wanted to hike up to Marmot Meadows, about a 1 ½ Mile hike, but a gain of some 1200 feet in elevation, quite steep. It is a bear area and I noted the Park Ranger also carried bear spray. It was getting late and so we chose to head back and go look for a camp for the night, down by the waterfront.

Scored a great spot, hot showers, right on the beach, overlooking the trawler fleet and Resurrection Bay activities. Made a camp fire on the beach, drank beer and ate chips, looking out over the water, watching otters play and looking up to the surrounding glaciers, now this is the life.

A great night sleep, some rain came in early this morning.

Weather: Wonderfully warm and sunny – brilliant day. Showers overnight.

Wildlife: Ravens, Seagulls, Salmon, Otters.
