Lastg Day being 13

Last day being 13.

8 September 2010

Well, woke this morning with this being Tayla’s last day of being 13. After chatting to our neighbours last night, the Monster RV family had just sailed up from Valdez on the ferry and said it was spectacular, as there were numerous icebergs and the ship had to sail slow. Our original plan was to sail from near here to Valdez, but the cost we though prohibitive, as it’s only six hours. So we started the morning working on the plan of sailing, the ferry departed at 2.30p from Whittier. The Monster RV was $450 to sail, but when we did our costings, we realised their kids sailed free, ours are adults, so it was a $650 cost, so we reverted to our second plan that we were most recently running with, drive around, it’s two days.

We headed north and got as far as the Alyska Resort at Girdwood, took the cable car to the top of the mountain and Tayla and I then continued our hike up to the small glacier. En-route down, we took a different and very steep route resulting in Tayla sliding down on her butt, it was quiet funny. Quite a few Black Bears in the area but spotted none.

Headed north, and when we reached Turnagain Arm, we spotted Beluga Whales. Continued north and stopped again to view Beluga Whales when the Bore Tide came in, so witnessed this phenomenon.

Headed past Anchorage and onto the Glen Highway toward Tok. Found an absolutely wonderful camp beside King River, at the junction to Matensuska River (Glacial fed) and set a fire and relaxed, the kids enhancing their skills with the BB Gun. This is a fairly remote and very enjoyable spot to camp, no tourists.

Weather: Low – low 40’s (didn’t realise the window was open, bugger, High mid 60’s.

Wildlife: Beluga Whales.
