Monster RV

The Monster RV

7 September 2010

After a sleep in and a potter around camp, we visited the Alaska Sealife Centre, on the other side of town away from the Port. Lovely centre, learnt that during the

Exon Valdez oil spill over a 1,000 Otters were found dead and many more are thought to have perished as well. The Otter is a very entertaining character, floating on his back eating his fish he has caught. The Centre had a huge Stellar Seal who knew we were photographing him. We then explored the “township” of Seward (not the port which we did yesterday). The township is about a ¼ of a mile from the Port. We found an internet cafĂ© and hence loaded the other Blogs. Josh and I explored a viaduct that was gushing water (photo below), and did a Geocache. Found a different/better spot on the waterfront and set camp.

We met two lovely families, one from Bellingham with their son the other from Wisconsin, but originally he was from Toronto and she was from Russia, they had their two children (2,4) in Singapore and we currently driving around the world in their specifically designed RV (see photo of Monster RV), home schooling their kids and running their internet based businesses, one each.. This Monster RV is a Ford F650, our RV is an F 450, in Australia we only have F250;s.. Jay the owner built it from recycled or renewable sources, inside the kitchen and fitted out from bamboo. We sat around our camp fire until near midnight, it was one of the most wonderful evenings we have had in Alaska. We swapped details, both, though having been to Australia, are planning on returning.

Weather: Beautifully clear blue sky, warm day.

Temp: L low 40’s, H mid 60’s.

Wildlife: Other than the huge sealife in the Centre, we saw Otters and an Eagle.
