The Shack and the Grizzly

12 September 2010

Grizzly

Up early and back down the falls for an early morning photo, breakfast, pack and we headed back along the road about 6 miles to the other Grizzly area river, Klukshu. There is a First Nations peoples Fish Camp there and we went in to see their camp. They have an interesting history, and this fish camp is part of that. They are part of the original Tlingit.

Their little shop was not open, I was hoping to purchase a pair of Moose Hide slippers, but we looked around their area of the Klukshu River, noting all the Salmon, some spawning. We spoke to some locals and then heard some movement over in the brush, noting evidence of bears. Saw nothing and left.

We made our way toward the British Columbia state border. Soon after we stopped for morning tea at a little shack, in the middle of open plains, surrounded by ice capped mountains. The shack was unlocked, and it was a refuge for cyclist and hikers hiking this highway. We noted the many bits and pieces in the shack and that many visitors had left a little something of themselves, including signing in a book. So we left a keyring kangaroo, a Kangaroo Sticker Road type sign, and all our firewood, for the next person needing the small wood fire pot belly in the shack. See the photo’s. The location of this shack is N59 42.778 W140 09.176

We continue through the US Customs Border and back into the land of imperial measurement, and down through the Bald Eagle Reserve into Haines. Checked out town, and decided on a paid RV site to access internet and showers. We discovered that down at the Chilkoot River Fish Trap, some Grizzly Bears had moved in, this morning there were two bears, one with 2 cubs and the other with 3 cubs. So after dinner, we headed down, as this early evening time was best. These two sows were not there but there was a huge male Grizzly, happily parked up against the fish trap and eating salmon to his hearts content. We watched him for nearly an hour. See the photo’s below.

The RV park we are in closes tomorrow, many businesses are shutting up shop along our route. So our plan is to camp in among the Grizzly’s up at the Chilkoot river. Not sure when we’ll head over the Skagway, but will check with the marine feries tomorrow.

Weather: low 30’s while up in the Yukon overnight, higher 60’s while down here by the water.

Wildlife : Grizzly Bear, Bald Eagles, Salmon.
